How’s it going?: Cuppy

How are you doing and how are things going for you right now?

Things are not ideal, I’m meant to be touring the world now as we speak… It’s shame not having any gigs at the moment; I’m sure all artist feel the same. HOWEVER, I for once have time to organize my music catalogue and curate in a peaceful environment. I’m definitely keeping active whilst in quarantine.

What are some of the key pieces of gear in your arsenal to help you stay active through this period, and why?

During quarantine my pillow spray, headphones, and bible have become essentials.

What are your top 3 watches right now? Movies, TV shows, Documentaries.

My Netflix people need to watch:

Queen Sono because it’s the first Original African series plus I DJ’ed for the premiere…

Homecoming because Beyonce’s work ethic keeps me motivated…

Tiger King because it’s EPIC and I actually adopted a baby lion last year…

What’s your secret in staying productive and getting stuff done when you’re just at home all day?

To be honest I have no choice but to work! Haha.. My upcoming debut EP is overdue, so my Cupcakes are constantly keeping me on my toes to finish it. I’m so excited about ‘Original Copy’, I just need to use this time to complete the project.

What would your advice be to younger DJs/producers who are struggling to find a direction and feel a bit lost through this period?

I would say use your mind as a sponge; soak everything in so you can find that thing that makes you tick. There is no ONE path. Your passion will become a profession with time, you just need to find and nurture it. For me, my seed was African music, but I went through a whole journey before I found my passion and niche. Try one new thing a day and enjoy the process.

How do you think this period is going to impact the DJ community in the near future?

I think we’ve all learnt to be more inwards, and reflective. Many of us move too fast with the music industry’s pace. I’ve become more self-aware and self-fulfilling in the last few weeks. Now I know my own energy is enough.
